Border Peoples Conference

Member organizations of the Southwest Network for Environmental Justice’s “Border Justice Campaign” will hold a “Border Peoples Conference” in Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point), Sonora September 27-29. This Conference is a response to the “Border Governor’s Conference” that will be held in Puerto Peñasco, a conference whose proposed aim is to consider and deliberate over the common problems facing U.S.-Mexico border communities. International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

On Thursday, August 9, 2007 the Alianza Indígena Sin Fronteras (Indigenous Alliance Without Borders) convened a press conference and public forum to commemorate International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, commemorated annually since 1994, in recognition of the first United Nations working group on indigenous issues in Geneva, 1982. jose-matus-indigenous-peoples-day.jpgSpeakers included Michelle Cook, Dine’, Youth Representative for the Alianza Indígena Sin Fronteras and University of Arizona Native Scholar; Shannon Rivers, Akimel O’odham indigenous community activist; Julian Hernandez, Yaqui ceremonial leader in Barrio Libre community of South Tucson; Kat Rodriguez, Co-Chair of the Southwest Network for Environmental and Economic Justice; Tupac Enrique Acosta, Director of Tonatierra in Phoenix; and Jose Matus, Yaqui ceremonial leader and Director of Alianza Indígena Sin Fronteras.

UN Representative on Human Rights of Migrants Hears Testimonies

Saturday, May 5th, a staff representative of the Alianza and Ofelia Rivas of O’odham Voice Against the Wall spoke with Jorge Bustamante, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, during a visit to Tucson by Mr. Bustamante to hear testimonies of human rights abuses on the southern border. Black Alliance for Just Immigration Tour

On April 28th, following the Alianza member gathering, two members of the Alianza Indígena Sin Fronteras further addressed immigration and international travel policy issues affecting indigenous peoples as part of a discussion panel on indigenous border issues that concluded the “Braving Borders Building Bridges: A Journey for Human Rights” tour hosted by the Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) in partnership with the Coalicíon de Derechos Humanos and the National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Alianza Indígena Sin Fronteras Gathering

On Saturday April 28th the Alianza held a gathering for its members in Tucson, Arizona. The gathering was attended by both Alianza members and staff, as well as invited members of indigenous and human rights organizations and local indigenous communities. Representatives of the indigenous peoples community development organization Tonatierra were present to talk about their work in the international indigenous movement and its relationship to the indigenous border rights issues addressed by the Alianza Indígena Sin Fronteras. III Cumbre Continental De Pueblos Y Nacionalidades Indigenas De Abya Yala/III Continental Summit of Indigenous Nations and Pueblos of Abya Yala

The Alianza Indigena Sin Fronteras participated as part of a U.S. delegation in the III Continental Summit of Indigenous Nations that took place in Guatemala, March 26-30, 2007. The summit brought together indigenous peoples from all over the Americas to discuss their common struggles and create international ties between indigenous communities and nations. The summit held at the Iximche’ ruins near Tecpan, Guatemala concluded with the following Declaration:
